Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus visited the students at K.M. Smith Elementary
School,
    Greater Nanticoke Area. A special gift was presented to each child in
kindergarten through fifth grade. The program was sponsored by the K.M. Smith

Cosmetologists hold annual Christmas party at Victoria Inns
   
The Wyoming Valley Cosmetologists held their annual Christmas party at
Victoria Inns in Pittston Township. The evening included cocktails, dinner and
dancing. The event hosted more than 100 local stylists and their friends. Any
cosmetologists interested in becoming a member of the group may contact

West Pittston High School Class of 1958 celebrates reunion at Appletree
Terrace
   
West Pittston High School Class of 1958 celebrated its 40th reunion on Nov.
14 at Appletree Terrace, Dallas. Class President Attorney William Russo
welcomed the class. Invocation was given by classmate the Rev. Edwin Martin.
Class Secretary Eugene Bonfanti awarded prizes, and classmate Leonard Spinelli
led the singing of the alma mater. A donation was made to VISION in memory of
deceased graduates Paul Berkant, Regina Zigmont Davis, Lottie Mikolaichik,
Dale Robbins, Donald Roth, Margaret Baird Sheridan and Daniel Tambur. Shown,

Mercy Auxiliary presents donation
   
The Auxiliary at Mercy Special Care Hospital, Nanticoke, presented Robert
Williams, hospital administrator, with a check for $30,000 at its annual
Christmas Holiday Luncheon Meeting. The funds will be used for patient care
and/or equipment needed at the facility. Shown are Auxiliary officers, from

Learning Tree holds grand opening
   
The Learning Tree Day Care Center at the Jewish Community Center,
Wilkes-Barre, held its grand opening and ribbon cutting. The Learning Tree is
open from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Thursday and 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
on Fridays. The Learning Tree Day Care Center, a United Way affiliated center,
is located at 60 S. River St., Wilkes-Barre. For more information, call

Little Flower collects Toys for Tots
   
Little Flower Manor and Saint Therese Residence, Wilkes-Barre, participated
again in the annual U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots drive. Toys were
donated by residents, visitors, volunteers, and staff to help provide holiday
gifts for those in need of assistance. Last year, the Marine Corps Training
Center, Wyoming, collected 100,000 toys for more than 40,000 local families.

King’s and Wilkes students meet with Carol Moutray, Ph.D., assistant
professor of education at King’s, and Cathy Gourley of the Center for the Book
in the Library of Congress, to evaluate the entries. Seated, from left: Lara

College students help with national contest
   
King’s College and Wilkes University interns will help log in entries for
“Letters About Literature ’99,” a national essay contest presented by The
Center for the Book in the Library of Congress, and sponsored by King’s
College, Weekly Reader Corporation, and Wilkes University. The 16th annual
writing contest invites students to write a letter to an author, living or
dead, explaining how the author’s book changed their way of viewing the world
and themselves. King’s along with Wilkes interns will read and evaluate close
to 30,000 entries, preparing the letters for judging by a panel selected by
the Library of Congress and Weekly Reader.

Rice Elementary’s fourth grade class participated in the Toys for Tots
