There was a chill in the air but that did not stop the many anglers at the Lackawanna State Park April 13 for the opening of trout season.

There were many boats on the lake in addition to those casting their lines on shore.

Many were out before the 8 a.m. start time to search for the perfect spot.

Mark Wiernusz of Tunkhannock started his day at 5:30 a.m. by stopping for breakfast before heading to the lake. By 6:30, he found his perfect spot by the boat dock. He remained all day as long as the fish were biting.

An hour had passed and he had not caught any trout. He said he “usually has six by now.” Wiernusz was using Power Bait. He cast his line in a fine arch and in a short time had a bite. His award was a trout which he would take home.

“This is fun,” he said.

According to the Fish and Boat Commission web site all anglers age 16 or older must possess a fishing license along with a trout salmon stamp.

The license needs to be displayed on an outer garment. The fish caught must be a minimum size of seven inches and the limit is five combined species from opening day April 13 to Labor Day.

The Heid family from Jessup was trying their luck, along with sons Jamie, 8 and Ethan, 3. They were also using Power Bait and had already caught a trout that Ethan proudly displayed. It would be used for dinner later that day. They planned to stay until noon unless the fish started biting or the snacks ran out.

Judging by how much fun Jamie and Ethan were having, the family was in for a long day.
