The Wyoming Seminary Varsity Club recently honored six Sem alumni for their outstanding athletic achievements during its 39th Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony and banquet.
The 2013 honorees and their respective sports are: Matthew Bruno, Class of 1994, soccer; Kathryon Burnside, Class of 1988, field hockey; Christina Caputo Gilbert, Class of 1989, field hockey; Dennis Packard, Class of 2000, ice hockey; Tricia Rado, Class of 2001, swimming; and Dr. Neil “Buddy” Shah, Class of 2001, tennis.
Bruno, of Shavertown, excelled on the Blue Knights soccer and basketball teams and served as co-captain of both teams in his senior year. He helped lead the basketball team to the district playoffs and averaged 14 points per game while leading the team in rebounds at 10 per game.
He also was a four-year member of the NCAA Div. III Williams College soccer team and was named a Williams College Scholar-Athlete after he and his teammates won the NCAA men’s soccer championship in his freshman year. As a senior, he helped lead the team to a third-place finish in the NCAA Championships.
He holds a bachelor’s degree in biology from Williams College and is serving as a financial analyst at Vicuna Advisors.
Burnside, of Dallas, was an outstanding member of the field hockey team and helped lead the 1987 team to victory in the District AA Championship and runner-up in state competition.
She was a four-year member of the Lynchburg College Hornets field hockey team which won the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) championship in each of her four years. The Hornets also made appearances in the NCAA tournament three of those four years. Burnside was also an award-winning member of the Hornets equestrian team.
She holds a bachelor of arts degree from Lynchburg and currently serves as co-chair of the Back Mountain Young Professionals, is active as a Sem volunteer and on the membership committee of the Back Mountain Chamber of Commerce, the planning committee of the Lands at Hillside Farms and the Wilkes-Barre Triathlon, and is a member of the Eastern Insurance Group.
