NEWPORT TWP. — The Newport Township Municipal Board is gearing up to make the move to its newly built township building in the upcoming weeks.

The board held its annual meeting Monday evening, and even amid the regular township reports and business, the mood was that of excitement and anticipation for the upcoming move.

“I know we’ve been waiting a while and we were aiming to be in the new building already,” said Township Manager Richard Zika. “We ran into a few technical issues in regards to our phone lines and our alarm. However, we have that all sorted out now, and we’re slated to begin moving into the new facility on July 8th.”

“We also know there have been a few issues with the phone lines,” added Zika. “If you are trying to call the Municipal Building and having difficulties getting through to the regular line, please call the 570-735-2000 number in the meantime.”

The Newport Township community will be holding a dedication ceremony and open house for the public to tour the facility at 7 p.m. Aug. 3.

Other action

Also mentioned at the meeting were some improvement projects taking place in the township over the coming months.

The paving project on Robert Street began July 1, and the Robert Street bridge project is slated to begin this week. The bridge project has a projected completion date of Sept. 4.

The parks and recreation committee has also begun improvements on both the Glen Lyon and Wanamie parks, aiming to complete the projects before the summer months are out.

“We are working very hard on a solution, but we have also noticed lots of littering in the Wanamie Park,” said Commissioner John Vishnefski. “We just ask the community to use the trash receptacles in the park and stop littering.”

The next Newport Township Municipal Board Meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Aug. 3 at the new municipal building, 351 W. Kirmar Ave., Wanamie.
