WILKES-BARRE TWP. — A Bronx, New York man was arrested Sunday after township police allegedly found a large amount of unpackaged heroin, packaging materials, handguns and cash inside two rooms of a motel on Schecter Drive.

Thomas Abreu Jr., 34, last known address as Scott Street, Wilkes-Barre, was arrested when he emerged from a room at Motel 6.

Police investigated reports that Abreu had allegedly threatened an ex-girlfriend with a handgun in the area of Mundy and Kidder streets just before 3 p.m.

Searching the area, police spotted Abreu standing next to his vehicle outside Motel 6 about 40 minutes later.

Abreu ran into the motel when he seen a police cruiser.

Police learned Abreu had rented a room at the motel but was arrested when he exited an adjacent room, according to the criminal complaint.

Police allege Abreu entered the adjacent room occupied by two people with a backpack. The occupants told police Abreu stashed sandwich bags full of “stuff,” suspected heroin, under a mattress, about $1,000 in a dresser drawer and hid a red bag filled with unpackaged heroin in a trash can in the bathroom, according to the criminal complaint.

Three handguns were allegedly found in the backpack, police said.

Police searched Abreu’s room he rented and allegedly found 51 heroin packets, packaging materials, a grinder, and nearly $7,250 found in a sock, the complaint says.

Court records indicate Abreu served a prison sentence on a drug trafficking conviction in Bronx, New York, which prevents him from owning, carrying and possessing a firearm.

Police say Abreu frequently traveled between New York and Pennsylvania, and had recently completed parole on the New York drug conviction, court records say.

Abreu was arraigned Monday by District Judge Diana Malast in Plains Township on four counts of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance and three counts each of possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and illegal possession of a firearm.

He was jailed at the Luzerne County Correctional Facility for lack of $100,000 bail.
