PLAINS TWP. — The Cross Valley Federal Credit Union took an unusual approach to teaching youngsters financial literacy Saturday.

The credit union used games, food, entertainment, prizes and even pony rides as it hosted its annual Youth Day at its main branch on Baltimore Drive.

“At Cross Valley Federal Credit Union, we believe that together we can teach our youth valuable lessons and have fun at the same time,” said Jill Houseknecht, vice president of marketing/operation. “Youth Day is a long standing family tradition. … and has been occurring for nearly 20 years.

“The best part is it’s free.”

About 500 participants turned out for the event.

Along with the fun, the event seeks to introduce children to the basics of how money and banking works for a typical family through the use of games, information and other challenges.

“It’s never too early to develop healthy financial habits,” Houseknecht said.

The credit union’s mascot, Scottie Saver, provided information explaining finances to help the future consumers learn about how money works. In addition, attendees received a special loan promotion.

Throughout the year, Cross Valley promotes financial literacy, Houseknecht stressed, offering presentations at local schools and other venues, all of which culminate on Youth Day.

Enthusiastic staff worked the event along with loyal friends and members. Houseknecht also thanked the Board of Directors and the local businesses and organizations that sponsored the event, including Price Chopper, Pepsico, Coca-Cola and Rita’s Italian Ice.

Local Girl Scouts participated along with volunteers from the Wyoming Valley Drug & Alcohol Association, Plains Fire Department, Plains Recycling Department, Plains Police Department and other local businesses.

The children watched Justin Credible make balloon art, had photos taken on ponies, tumbled in the bounce house, got their faces painted, made their own sundaes and won prizes and played games.

All employees and their families contribute to make this event a success, Houseknecht said. The event would not be possible without them, she added.

Cross Valley is “lucky to have such a wonderful and helpful staff to work with,” Houseknecht said. “They are always ready to pitch in and lend a helping hand whenever and wherever is needed. This is definitely a team effort.”
