PITTSTON — The Water Street Bridge, also known as the Firefighter’s Memorial Bridge, will be shut down for several hours today during a routine maintenance inspection.

STV Inc., out of Williamsport, is doing the inspection. The firm is looking for rust, cracks or any other problems that might pose a hazard to the traffic. Two months ago, STV inspected the underside of the bride. The firm said this bridge is in pretty good shape.

The Luzerne County-owned bridge has been in Pittston for more than 100 years. It was built in 1914 and was an open-gate bridge until 1984. Since then, the bridge has withstood several hurricanes and floods.

The bridge connects West Pittston with Pittston. The bridge is expected to be open later this afternoon.

The Water Street Bridge in Pittston will be closed for a maintainence inspection until later this afternoon.
