DURYEA — The borough council adopted the five-year update to the Luzerne County 2015 Hazard Mitigation Plan at its monthly meeting on Tuesday at the borough building.
A Hazard Mitigation Plan allows municipalities to receive funds for any properties and streets damaged by natural disasters, such as the 2011 flood, in Duryea’s case.
To be eligible for state and federal disaster assistance, county governments must prepare and adopt hazard mitigation plans outlining potential risks and update these plans every five years — a requirement of the Federal Disaster Mitigation Act.
The plan is mandated and required by all municipalities in the county.
Also on Tuesday, council tabled a motion to create a hiring committee to interview and communicate to council regarding new hires within the borough. The motion will be heard again in the new year.
In other business:
• A Christmas committee will be formed to work alongside the crime watch to decorate the downtown.
• Council members passed a resolution to apply for a Local Share Account Grant for a pair of dump trucks and a garbage packer.
• A Local Share Grant will also be applied for sidewalks from the 300 to 700 block of Main Street in Duryea.
• Council ratified the hiring of Cody Kalinas as a part-time street department worker.
The next meeting for the Duryea Borough Council will be at 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 8 at the borough building. There will be a budget meeting on Tuesday.
