TUNKHANNOCK — The Diocese of Scranton and United Neighborhood Centers of Northeastern Pennsylvania (UNC) have announced an agreement for UNC to lease Camp St. Andrew for the 2016 summer camping season.
According to a news release, UNC will operate Project Hope, a girls resident camp and girls and boys basketball camps there in July.
Last fall, the Diocese announced the closure of Camp St. Andrew at the close of the 2015 summer camping season after an assessment of Camp operations. At the time, Diocese of Scranton Bishop Bambera directed Diocesan staff to explore options that would include potential benefits for youth and young adults, which prompted discussions with UNC.
The Diocese and UNC will continue to discuss a potential permanent transfer of the camp facilities to UNC, church officials said.
