FAIRMOUNT TWP. —Two men were killed as a result of an all terrain vehicle accident Saturday night in western Luzerne County.

Travis Chapin, 25, Stillwater, and Timothy Brek, 35, Sweet Valley, were both pronounced dead on the scene following the crash in Fairmount Township.

At approximately 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, Chapin and Brek were traveling east on Volanski Road when the occupant’s side-by-side all terrain vehicle left the roadway and traveled down an embankment, flipping the vehicle over.

According to Pennsylvania State Police in Shickshinny, Brek, who was driving the 2011 Polaris ATV, failed to negotiate a left curve in the roadway. The ATV traveled approximately 160 feet, patrially off the road, while negotiating the turn before hitting a stump. The vehicle then traveled down an embankment, when both Brek and Chapin were ejected from the vehicle.

State police said it is presumed speed was a factor in the crash. State police also said no safety equipment was used by either Brek or Chapin.

The state police will continue to investigate the incident. Anyone with information is asked to call state police at Shickshinny at 570-542-4117 and ask for Trooper Ben Bigus.
