KINGSTON — The West Side Career & Technology Center Joint Operating Committee unanimously appointed Tom Duffy as its new administrative director on Monday.

Duffy, who will continue to serve as superintendent of the Dallas School District, will be paid $50,000 annually, according to board member David Usavage.

“Duffy is a professional who is familiar with the latest educational trends,” said Usavage. “I believe he is going to do a great job.”

Outgoing administrator Thomas Viviano tendered his resignation in early April indicating that his last day would be June 7.

He was receiving compensation of more than $100,000 annually plus benefits.

According to Usavage, Duffy has already taken an active role, working on the possibility of a child care program being offered to students of the center.

Addressing Duffy’s current position at Dallas School District, Usavage said, “Patrick Musto, Kristin Pitarra and Colleen Slocum, who represent that district, all voted in favor of Duffy, indicating they think he can serve in both positions.”

Duffy, who served as the superintendent of record for the school this year, is aware that some might question his ability to fulfill the requirements of both jobs, but he is confident that he can get the job done.

“(CTC Principal) Richard Rava would oversee day-to-day operations of the facility,” said Duffy. “I would be on the administrative side.”

In another matter, the committee also approved its 2016-2017 budget at $6,966,438, which is a 1.34 percent increase over last year’s budget of $6,874,314.

The matter now will go before the school boards of the school’s five sending districts for approval.

The next meeting of the school’s Joint Operating Committee is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. June 27.
