HARVEYS LAKE — New hires, including former Forty Fort and Plymouth borough manager Barbara Fairchild, and an award recipient were main topics at the borough council meeting Tuesday.

Council members unanimously voted to hire Fairchild as the borough’s new financial adviser for the remainder of the 2016 year. She will receive $45 per hour, not to exceed $2,500 for the year, for work completed in the new position.

The borough also hired new part-time employees.

Anthony Kowalczyk and John Gyoury were hired as part-time police officers and Ken Teresta will fill a seasonal part-time position with the borough’s road department.

Lake-Lehman student-athlete Dominic Hockenbury was presented with a certificate of achievement from board President Bill Hilburt at the beginning of the meeting.

Hockenbury, who recently graduated, has gained notoriety locally and statewide for his accomplishments in track and field as well as cross-country running. He is a four-time PIAA medalist and two-time champion in cross-country, as well as a two-time national medalist in track.

Hockenbury currently holds multiple record times in both sports and carries a 4.06 GPA academically. He has also achieved principal honors throughout his high school years and has been consistently named a member of the National Honor Society.

He will attend Syracuse University in the fall.

The council members also voted to apply for a grant to demolish and beautify the old police station.

Councilwoman Michell’e Boice said borough officials will submit an application for a gateway grant that will allow for sprucing up the former location of the police station.

If the application is accepted, Boice said the location would get a face-lift, including new grass, benches, flowers and a kiosk that will explain the lake’s rules, regulations, history and safety tips.

“This (grant) is to help beautify the entrance to our community,” she told meeting attendees.
