WILKES-BARRE — A shooting in the 300 block on Stanton Street left one man dead, according to Police Chief Marcella Lendacky.

Another man was transported to an area hospital by ambulance.

Lendacky confirmed that a man was killed during the incident, which occurred at 320 Stanton Street around 8:30 p.m. Lendacky also said that the person taken to the hospital by ambulance was possibly a suspect.

Police did not identify the victim.

A female also exited the home, sitting in a vehicle while looking at the scene.

Lendacky added that the public had nothing to fear as the two people involved in the shooting were known to each other.

“Its an active and very early investigation,” she said. “But this as not a random neighborhood shooting.”

In addition to city police, Luzerne County District Attorney Stefanie Salavantis, state police and officials from the Luzerne County Coroner’s Office were at scene.

Dozens of area residents made their way to the street, many of them saying that the house had been well kept and often decorated for holidays.

Several said they had heard an altercation between a male and a female in a field adjacent to the property shortly before the shots were fired.

One resident, who asked not to be identified, said that she had been inside the home when it was for sale in 2012.

“I believe they moved here to get away from a bad situation,” she said of the residents of the house.

Mark Neberdosky, who lives on Park Avenue, said he was working on his car and heard what he thought were five shots fired. He said he then made his way down the street, which was soon flooded with emergency vehicles.

“I used to make deliveries to the house,” said Neberdosky.

Many of those gathered said they had felt increasingly unsafe in the neighborhood during the last several years.
