WILKES-BARRE — A report of a gunshot led to a 19-year-old man facing charges and officers seizing over 1,000 bags of heroin, according to police.

Police said that at 10:48 p.m. Monday, officers were dispatched to a residence in the first block of South Welles Street for a report of a gunshot.

A witness reportedly told police that arguing and a gunshot were heard from within the residence.

Officers went to the doorway of the residence, when they allegedly heard a male voice say, “I will shoot you.” Officers then allegedly heard the sound of a semi-automatic handgun being loaded.

Police said the door was opened, and officers saw two men inside the residence. One of the men was identified as Shakur Brownstein, 19, of Wilkes-Barre, but the police report did not identify the second man.

Police say Brownstein had a .357 revolver in one hand, and a stolen semi-automatic .40 caliber handgun in the other.

Brownstein was taken into custody without incident “due to quick and decisive actions by the officers,” according to police. Officers then conducted a sweep of the residence, but found no gunshot victims.

Officers then obtained a search warrant from Magisterial District Judge Joseph Carmody to search the remainder of the residence. Police said that during the search, officers found 1,184 bags of suspected heroin that was packaged for sale.

Brownstein was jailed at the Luzerne County Correctional Facility to await arraignment on charges of receiving stolen property, possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver and other charges.

The police report did not indicate if the second man allegedly encountered in the residence is facing charges.
