NANTICOKE — Residents offered condolences and prayers on social media Wednesday evening after hearing of the passing of police Chief William Shultz.

In a post on its Facebook page, the Nanticoke Police Department announced the death of Shultz, who passed away Wednesday morning after battling cancer.

According to the post, Shultz had been a police officer since 1974, when he joined the Plymouth Township Police Department. He was hired by Nanticoke in 1990 and was appointed chief in August 2012.

Comments on the post called the chief a gentleman and a friend. People thanked Shultz for his service, calling him “a cop’s cop” and an “all around good guy.”

Funeral arrangements and an obituary have not yet been released.
