WILKES-BARRE — The Sherman Hills apartment complex was the site of a fatal shooting on Sunday night.

Luzerne County District Attorney Stefanie Salavantis confirmed the fatal shooting of one male victim.

Salavantis said she was unable to provide any additional information prior to press deadline on Sunday.

City police, fire department and emergency vehicles were on scene shortly after the call came in to Luzerne County 911 at about 8:15 p.m.

Luzerne County Coroner Bill Lisman and a representative from the District Attorney’s Office were on scene at about 9 p.m.

A Pennsylvania State Police Forensic Services Unit arrived at about 9:30 p.m.

Police would not release any information prior to press deadline.

The troubled apartment complex has been the site of several fatal shootings and other violent crimes over the past several years.

Sherman Hills Holdings LLC, affiliated with Treetop Development LLC of Teaneck, New Jersey, bought the 344-unit complex for $15.8 million from Sherman Hills Realty LLC of Brooklyn, New York, which was warned that its Section 8 rent subsidies were in jeopardy after an “unsatisfactory” rating issued by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development from a 2013 inspection.

HUD was critical of the management by the former owner and directed it to address safety and security issues that endangered the lives of the tenants.

Wilkes-Barre city officials also identified Sherman Hills as a trouble spot where police responded to reports of robberies, assaults and shootings. The city fined the former the former owner $33,000 for rental inspection violations, but negotiated a settlement of $17,500 in February 2014 in order to avoid a prolonged legal fight over the amount of fines.

As a result of the growing concern for the safety of the residents and the public U.S. Rep. Matt Cartwright, D-Moosic, created a task force of community leaders and local and state elected officials that same year.
