WILKES-BARRE — A taxi driver managed to fight off a robber armed with a knife on Tuesday night, according to police.

Police said the driver, an employee for Burgit’s City Taxi Inc., picked up a man at Schiel’s Market on Hanover Street at approximately 10:17 p.m. Tuesday.

The driver then drove the man to Stanley Street, when the man allegedly held a knife to the driver’s throat and demanded money.

Police said the driver was able to fight off the suspect despite having the knife pressed against his throat.

The suspect then fled the scene on foot without obtaining any money.

Police described the suspect as a white man in his 40s that is 5 feet 6 inches tall and has gray hair. He was last seen wearing a grey hooded sweatshirt and sweatpants.
