DURYEA — A fire that stared inside a walk-in cooler and damaged several boxes inside Weis Market is under investigation.

Crews were dispatched to the store on Phoenix Street at approximately 7 a.m. for a report of a commercial structure fire. Mike Wall, chief engineer for the Germania Hose Company, said the fire originated in a walk-in cooler in the storage area of the store.

Wall explained that workers noticed the odor of smoke and notified the fire department. Other than some smoldered boxes, Wall did not believe the building sustained any structural damage.

The fire was classified as a second alarm due to the building being a commercial structure, and “to get manpower and apparatus here due to the size of the building,” Wall said.

The Department of Agriculture has been notified of the fire, and Wall said they will make the determination as to whether or not the store can remain open.

“The fire department would recommend that they would be closed until they’re inspected,” Wall said.

A Pennsylvania State Police fire marshal is expected to investigate the fire. No injuries were reported.
