WILKES-BARRE — Authorities have released the name of the woman who was killed in a one-car crash Thursday.

Theresa Poplasky, 79, of Plains Township, was behind the wheel of the white Toyota when it slammed head-first into a light post at Pennsylvania Avenue and Market Street, according to the Luzerne County Coroner’s Office.

Poplasky was transported to an area hospital where she later died. The coroner’s office said county Coroner Bill Lisman ruled the cause of death “accidental” due to “multiple traumatic injuries.” Poplasky “may have” had a medical emergency, such as a heart attack, at the time of the accident, but her injuries were the cause of death, Mary Wallace, the coroner’s secretary, said.

Police on scene said the crash happened around 4:30 p.m. The front end of the vehicle was badly damaged, and the airbag was deployed.
