WILKES-BARRE — The 37th annual Wilkes-Barre St. Patrick’s Day parade kicks off at 2 p.m. Sunday.
The city received a green touch Thursday in preparation for the upcoming parade. Mayo Striping painted the green line between the yellow lines on Main Street for free, according to Tyler Ryan, of the mayor’s office.
Mayo has done the striping for three years, Ryan said.
The parade begins at the corner of South Main Street and South Street, proceeds along South Main Street to Public Square toward East Market Street and ends at the intersection of North Main and Union streets.
Before the parade, residents will be able to run in the Renal Race, which begins at 10 a.m. with registration opening at 8 a.m. or go to Barnes and Noble at noon to hear Nanticoke residents Fran and Sean Patrick Spencer read “Ian-John and the Leprechaun.”
The parade will be broadcast live on WYLN and Service Electric television. Those watching, or attending, will see entertainment including the Wyoming Valley Pipe & Drum Band, Three Imaginary Boys and David Blight School of Dance.
According to the National Weather Service, parade day will be partly sunny with a high near 25.
Mayor Tony George reminds residents to dress warmly for the day if they are coming out to the “family-friendly event.”
George stressed safety during the day, which can bring approximately 1,000 revelers out. He asked that everyone listen to police and stay respectful.
“Parade goers are advised to stay behind the barricades during the parade,” he said.
The mayor also encourages attendees to have a good time but to remember it’s a family event.
“Enjoy yourself and don’t overindulge while celebrating,” he said.
