As the winter storm nears the Wyoming Valley, forecasts are becoming clearer and predicting substantial snowfall in the area.

All of Northeastern Pennsylvania is under a winter storm warning from 8 p.m. tonight until 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Snow is expected to develop over the region after 11 p.m. tonight, and could become heavy at times overnight and on Tuesday. Snowfall rates of up to 2 inches per hour are possible. The snowfall intensity is expected to diminish into Tuesday night, but periods of snow are expected to create additional snowfall accumulations into Wednesday.

Anywhere from 12 to 18 inches of snowfall are expected by Wednesday, with localized amounts greater than 20 inches possible.

Winds are also expected to gust up to 30 mph from Tuesday afternoon and into Wednesday.

A winter storm warning means heavy snow is expected or occurring.

The forecast

Partly sunny skies are predicted for today, with a high near 32.

Snow is likely after 1 a.m. tonight, and the snow could be heavy at times. Up to 4 inches of snow is expected, and the low will be around 22.

Tuesday will bring more snow as the storm system settles into the region, and up to 10 inches of snow could fall. Blowing snow is also possible after 2 p.m. as the winds pick up speed. The high will be near 29.

Snow showers will persist before 2 a.m. on Tuesday night, followed by scattered snow showers. Up to 2 inches of snowfall is possible, and the low will be around 17.

Cloudy skies are expected Wednesday, along with a 50 percent chance of snow. The high will be near 25.

Mostly cloudy skies are predicted for Wednesday night, along with a slight chance of snow showers. The low will be around 15.
