WILKES-BARRE — City officials have announced they will utilize private contractors for snow removal in specific sections of the city.

Contracted snow removal of main roadways will begin around 7 p.m. and work through the night until snow begins to clear.

According to a news release, private contractors will be used for snow removal in the following streets and areas:

• Blackman Street from Twp. line to Carey Avenue

• Hazle Street From Blackman to Boulevard

• Carey Avenue from Township Line to Academy Street

• Hanover Street from South Main to Carey Avenue (hospital access)

• Northampton Street from Wilkes-Barre Township line to Wilkes-Barre Boulevard

• The Downtown area from North to South streets River street to the boulevard

• Scott Street from East Main Street to Mill streets

• George Avenue from Washington to Scott streets

• East Main Street from Washington to Scott streets

• Around Wilkes-Barre General Hospital

• Around Wilkes-Barre Fire Stations

Residents are urged to stay out of Downtown Wilkes-Barre and main thoroughfares so that the Department of Public Works can clear the way for emergency services.

Residents are advised to stay off the roads during the weather event, unless it is an absolute emergency.
