HAZLETON — A man is facing aggravated assault charges after police allege he stabbed a woman in the chest multiple times.
The suspect, according to police, was subsequently shot by a security officer that intervened.
Officers were dispatched at approximately 2:30 a.m. Monday to 44 East Broad St. for a report of shots fired. Upon arrival, officers found a woman with multiple stab wounds in her chest. Police said the wounds were a result of a domestic dispute.
The suspect was identified as Nelson Hernandez Rivera, 35.
Police said a uniformed security guard intervened during the dispute, and that Rivera sustained a gunshot wound to his leg.
Both Rivera and the woman are being treated at local trauma centers.
Hazleton city police are being assisted by the Luzerne County District Attorney’s Office. Assisting at the crime scene was the Pennsylvania State Police Forensic Services Unit, as well as police from West Hazleton, Butler Township, and Sugarloaf Township.
