WILKES-BARRE — A man attempted to jump from the Market Street Bridge but was stopped by a friend about 11:30 p.m. Thursday.

The would-be jumper was identified by his friends as a 30-year-old from Edwardsville. His girlfriend said he was distraught over a recent argument they had.

David Dumas said the man’s girlfriend called him to tell him her boyfriend was threatening to jump. Dumas, who was on nearby Public Square at the time, along with Raymond Knight then ran over to the bridge in an attempt to stop the man.

Dumas said he grabbed the man and slammed him against the side of the bridge, wrapping his arms and legs around him and holding him until police arrived.

The man was later taken into custody and transported to a local hospital by ambulance.
