NANTICOKE — A fire Saturday morning rekindled around noon, causing more damage to a double-block home in Nanticoke and displacing three people.

Shortly before 8 a.m., area fire departments responded to a house fire at 131-133 Orchard St.

“We had it knocked down in 10 to 15 minutes,” Fire Chief Kevin Hazleton said.

A post on Nanticoke City Fire Department’s Facebook page said the fire was visible from the second-floor front bedroom. He said all occupants and pets were accounted for.

The fire was ruled accidental and the residents were allowed back in the home. A Nanticoke city code official said the residents were “thrilled” they were allowed to begin restoring the home.

According to Luzerne County 911, a call then came in at 12:18 p.m. reporting that the fire had reignited.

“There must have been a hot spot,” the chief said. “It’s every fire company’s worst nightmare.”

Hazleton said a restoration company was in the home to begin cleanup when the fire reignited.

Again, Hazleton said, the fire was knocked down quickly.

The Hanover Township and Mocanaqua fire and EMS personnel helped Nanticoke on the afternoon call, along with Newport Township EMS.

Hazleton said the displaced residents have alternate lodging available and assistance from the American Red Cross was not needed.
