SUGARLOAF TWP. — An 84-year-old logger was killed Monday when part of a tree he was cutting fell on top of him.

Sugarloaf Township Fire Chief Duane Hildebrand said crews were dispatched at 12:05 p.m. for a report of a tree on top of a man in the area of Cedar Head Road.

The Associated Press identified the victim as William Burger, 84.

When crews reached him, he was already dead, Hildebrand noted.

He said crews had to access the scene via a logging trail. Mud was as deep as 8 inches in some spots, which made the trek to the remote area treacherous.

“It was very hard to reach,” said the chief.

Hildebrand said Burger was working with his son when the tree split and part of it fell on him.

Local media reports described Burger as an experienced logger.
