    University of Scranton wrestler competes in Australia
   
Mike Grandchamp of Saunderstown, R.I., was a University of Scranton
exchange student in Australia this spring and was a runner-up in the
Australian
   
National Wrestling Championships senior men’s divisionCompeting in the
167-pound weight class, Grandchamp, representing the South Australia Wrestling
Association, pinned James Foulshan of Western Australia in three minutes in
the quarterfinals. In the national semifinals, he pinned Anthony Stagg of
Victoria in 19 seconds.
   
A two-time Scholar All-American at Scranton, Grandchamp recorded the best
dual mark for the Royals last season with a 13-4 record. In his sophomore
season, he was a Middle Atlantic Conference All-Star and All-Region selection
at 158 pounds. He will be the senior team captain this season.
   
Grandchamp also begins his second season this fall as assistant coach of
the Lady Royals varsity volleyball team.

Seton Catholic High School seeks assistant coach
   
The Seton Catholic girls basketball team is looking for an assistant coach.
All interested candidates should call head coach Kathy Healey at 654-5424 or

Lions duo up for Butkus Award
   
Two Nittany Lion football players are among the candidates for the 1998
Butkus Award, presented to the nation’s top collegiate linebacker.
   
Junior middle linebacker Brandon Short of McKeesport and sophomore outside
linebacker LaVar Arrington of Pittsburgh are candidates. They are among 68
players on the preliminary list for the award.
   
A two-year starter, Short is an All-Big Ten and All-America candidate,
expected to be the leader of the Nittany Lion defense. He was named a
preseason All-American by Bob Griese’s College Football Yearbook and a second
team preseason All-American by Street & Smith’s College Football magazine.
   
Last season, Arrington played in every game at outside linebacker and is
challenging for a starting berth alongside Short. The 6-foot-3, 226-pound
Arrington collected 26 tackles, two sacks, one forced fumble and one pass
breakup.
   
Lady Lion basketball announces schedule
   
The Penn State Lady Lion basketball team will face several top-10 teams in
the 1998-99 season in addition to its nationally competitive Big Ten
opponents.
   
The highlight of the season will be a nationally televised game with 1998
Final Four participant Arkansas, which will air Jan. 9 on CBS. The schedule is
as follows; home games are capitalized.
   
November: 6- WOLTZEN SPORTS TOUR, 7:30 p.m.; 13- MALBAS (Sweden), 7:30

Lady Lion volleyball first in poll
   
In the preseason USA Today/AVCA Coaches Poll for women’s volleyball, Penn
State garnered the most votes to earn the top spot in the 1998 campaign.
   
This marks the first time in school history that the Lions have been ranked
No. 1 to begin the season. They have five starters and nine letterwinners
returning from last year’s squad that went 34-2 and lost in the national title
match to Stanford.
   
The rankings in the poll were as follows: 1. Penn State; 2. Long Beach
State; 3. USC; 4. Stanford; 5. Nebraska; 6. Florida; 7. Wisconsin; 8. BYU; 9.
Texas; 10. UC Santa Barbara; 11. Pacific; 12. Colorado; 13. Ohio State; 14.
