Pittston Area picked up a 79-0 win over Wyoming Area on the wrestling mats. The Patriots won the first six pins and a major decision to go along with five forfeits to garner the huge victory.
The match started at 135 where Pittston’s Jason LaNunziata edged Wyoming Area’s Joe Colangelo, 6-5. But nothing else about the match was close.
Kyle Emerick (140), Jeff Dunn (152), Dave Woodall (171), AJ Cary (189), Damien Kratz (125) and Larry Walsh (113) got pins. Gino Ardo picked up a major win, 12-0, at 103.
Pittston Area’s Denise Insogna provided two late free throws with no time on the clock as the Patriot girls picked up a 60-58 win over Berwick.
Insogna was fouled in the closing seconds and hit two free throws with the game tied to seal the win. Insogna, Jenn Cefalo and Carol Haas each scored 14 points for PA. Patty Amico added 12.
Berwick hit nine three-pointers in the loss.
Pittston Area’s girls basketball team upped its season record to 5-1 after coming away with two key wins during the week.
Early in the week, the girls took a slim 19-12 halftime lead against Valley West, only to finish off the Spartans, 64-19. Eileen Allardyce led the Patriots with a game-high 22 points. Mary Pat McMullen netted 13.
In the latter half of the week, Pittston Area defeated Coughlin, 62-57. McMullen was tops for the Patriots with 19 points. Mary Ellen Opeka had 14, while Kay McAndrew scored 12.
Simon Bernosky’s Wyoming Area boys basketball team won a thriller over rival Pittston Area, 54-50, in overtime.
The Warriors enjoyed a 20-16 halftime lead and were in command most of the way until Pittston Area battled back to tie the game in the final period and send the game to overtime.
In the extra period, Wyoming Area outscored the Patriots, 10-6. Kevin Connors scored 18 points for Pittston Area, while Paul Gillespie paced the Warriors with 21 points.
St. John’s boys basketball team picked up two key wins on the hardwood.
Jack Connors’ club got into a position to win the Southern Division first half championship of the Catholic League after wins over Wilkes-Barre Saint Mary’s, 66-61, and Ashley Saint Leo’s, 62-56, during the week.
Against Saint Mary’s, Frank Smith and Mike Burke combined for 44 points - Smith had 26. Frank Allan led all scorers with 18 points against Saint Leo’s.
