At least the Pittston Area cheerleaders won’t have to deal with subzero temperatures much longer.
The varsity cheerleaders will be off to Orlando, Fla., this month to compete in the National Cheerleading Competition held at Disney World.
The team received a bid from the national committee following their performance at regionals at Delaware Valley in November. The event was sponsored by the PIAA.
The Patriots also competed in the PIAA Competitive Cheer championships last weekend in Hershey. With 120 teams across four divisions, Pittston Area made it to the semifinals before being eliminated. Cumberland Valley was the champion, with Exeter Township runner-up.
The girls practice five days a week in addition to their committments to football games, basketball games and wrestling matches. The majority of the girls take college prep courses and also hold part-time jobs.
But their work is not completed. Each player must raise $1,000 to finance the trip to Florida.
