An impressive defensive showing ensured the Misericordia men’s basketball team would get to spend the next few days at home.
The Cougars held Manhattanville to just 15 points in the second half en route to a 67-41 win over the Valiants on the road Saturday in their regular-season finale.
“We were really locked in,” Cougars coach Trevor Woodruff said. “The kids played about as focused as they’ve been for an entire game all season.
“We’ve had spurts, but in terms of 40 minutes, that’s as locked in as we’ve been.”
With the win, Misericordia (15-10, 9-5) earned the No. 2 seed in this week’s Freedom Conference tournament and a home game against FDU-Florham. The Cougars and Devils will face off at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Anderson Center in the semifinals.
The schools split the regular-season series with the road team winning both times.
DeSales will host Manhattanville in the other semifinal with the championship scheduled for Saturday afternoon.
On Saturday, Misericordia got 14 points from Steve Ware as well as 12 from Matt Greene to lead the way. Freshman Erik Kerns had 11 points and eight rebounds.
The Cougars shot 25-of-49 (51 percent) from the floor and enter the postseason having won three of their last four.
