Wyoming Area’s Pat Heck pretty much cruised to the finals at 120 pounds. But that’s when things got tough in defense of his District 2 crown.

The Wyoming Area sophomore hit a first-period five-point move against Hanover Area senior Brad Glazenski at 120, but had to withstand a battle to stay off his back in the third period for a 5-3 victory at the District 2 Class AA wrestling tournament held last weekend at the Kingston Armory.

“I sort of caught him with that half-nelson and threw him to his back,” Heck said. “I tried my best to finish him, but he’s tough. That was the biggest move of the match. There was some pressure coming in with one title under my belt, but winning the second only paves the road for new challenges.”

Including Heck, Wyoming Area sent five wrestlers to the Northeast Regional at Williamsport High School. Heck wasn’t the only Warrior to take home some hardware from the Armory.

Charles Johnson won the title at 126 pounds with a win over GAR’s Anthony Tlatenchi. This was one of the quickest final matches you’ll ever see. Johnson pinned Tlatenchi in just 24 seconds.

Zachary Briggs took down fellow WVC wrestler Quince Hutchings at 152 pounds. Hutchings, of Meyers, fell early and Briggs picked up a major decision, 17-9.

Wyoming Area’s Kenny Beyer certainly had his hands full in the 132-pound final. He was pitted against Lake-Lehman’s Austin Harry. Harry became a four-time Class 2A district champion, and at the same time collected his 150th victory as the Black Knight picked up the 13-5 major decision over the Warrior freshman.

Warrior Jude Polit-Moran was a winner in the 195-pound third-place match. He pinned Kaine Rimmer of Hazleton in 3:29.

Lake-Lehman took home the team championship. Wyoming Area finished fifth.

In Class 3A, things didn’t go as well for Pittston Area.

Two Patriot grapplers went into the finals last weekend with hops of coming out with gold. At 126 pounds, Coughlin’s Bobby Hawkins took an 8-5 win over Pittston Area’s Tyler Lutecki. Keven Wesolowski fell to Dallas’ Connor Martinez, 6-3. Both received silver medals.

Jake Vaxmonsky took home bronze at 220 pounds after he took an overtime, 9-7 win over Wallenpaupack’s Kyle Hartman. Pittston Area’s Chris Lasecki fell to Berwick’s Dakota Conner in the 106-pound match.

Wyoming Valley West claimed the team championship. Pittston Area took seventh place. The Class 3A Northeast Regional tournament was held at Bethlehem Liberty High School.
