Four swimmers from the Greater Pittston YMCA Piranhas qualified for the State Championships at Penn State. Members of the team who qualified were Jill Balberchak, Wyoming Area; Lindsay Brown, Fairview Elementary; Lauren Bernoski, Wyoming Area; Samantha Scialpi, St. John the Baptist.
Laine Sheerer scored her 1500th career point on the varsity level at St. Mary’s Avoca. Unofficially, Sheerer topped the 2,000 point mark when biddy, JV and varsity statistics are combined. The head coach of the team was Ellen Kovaleski. She was assisted by Agnes Cesare.
Wyoming Area’s Mark Blannard accepted an offer to play basketball at King’s College.
Blannard was a consensus All-Scholastic selection, leading Wyoming Area to a playoff berth his senior year and averaged over 18 points per game during the regular season. Blannard also ranked in the top three in his class scholastically at Wyoming Area.
St. John the Baptist eighth grade basketball team captured the 1974 Pittston Lions Tournament title. The Gladiators won four games in a row to take the tourney, beating Holy Rosary, Gate of Heaven, Mt. Carmel Pittston, and winning the final game against St. John the Evangelist 31-30.
Tom Scholato was the coach. Members of the team were Michael Pisony, Andrew Kosik, Bob Kosik, Rich Kosik, Joe Kleback, Robert Zigmund, Bob Ames, Jeff Vetack, Allan Cheskiewicz, Charles Sciandra, Mark Stankus, Tom Kobylski and Eugene Race.
