KINGSTON — After winning just two games against top seed Keller McGurrin of Scranton Prep in the team tournament final, Wyoming Seminary’s Chris Kim wanted to do more if a rematch came up.

Kim did do more, but his valient effort fell short.

McGurrin won the District 2 Class 2A boys tennis championship Monday with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Kim at Kirby Park.

After taking the first set, McGurrin broke Kim’s serve to open the second set and followed with a strong second game to move to within four games of the title.

Then Kim pushed back, fending off a pair of break points on his serve and taking consecutive points on unforced McGurrin errors to close to 2-1.

Kim ran his points streak to six straight, breaking McGurrin’s serve at love in the fourth game to level the second set at 2.

McGurrin regained control of the match, winning the next two games before Kim again seized the momentum. During the seventh game, McGurrin urged himself to “play smart,” but that didn’t happen until the next game. Kim took advantage and cut his deficit to 4-3, but would get no closer.
