MOOSIC — The Misericordia baseball team dropped its opening game to Baldwin Wallace, 8-4, Wednesday morning at PNC Field at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional.
Misericordia took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Chirs Boroch looped a soft liner just over a leaping Zimmerman and moved to second a sacrifice bunt. After moving up a groundout, Boroch came home on a wild pitch.
Baldwin Wallace answered with three runs in the bottom of the first.
Brad Gugliotta led off with a double inside the right field line and tied the score, then Chontos singled to put runners on the corners and Eric Murphy made it 3-1 with a two-out, two-run triple into the right field corner.
Baldwin-Wallace made it 5-1 in the second when Alex Green lined a lead-off single up the middle, stole second and came home on Gugliotta’s chopper through the middle.
Gugliotta then doubled inside the right field line for the second time in the fourth and Chontos lined a two-out double to right center to stretch the lead to 6-1.
Misericordia got a pair of runs back in the fifth as Boroch dropped a single into short right and Nick Hair walked. After Zimmerman came on to pitch, Lindsay singled past a diving first baseman to score Boroch. Max German lined a single to right to make it 6-3.
Boroch reached on an error to lead off the sixth, moved up on a fielder’s choice and scored on Lindsay’s single to center to make it 6-4.
In the bottom of the sixth, Chontos singled to right field to drive in a run and Steve Montgomery’s squeeze bunt was misplayed to make it 8-4.
Baldwin Wallace will face the winner of top-seeded Moravian and eighth-seeded Haverford, Thursday at 4:30 p.m. while Misericordia, 29-14-1, will face the loser in an elimination game, Thursday at 10 a.m.
