Mario Monacelli went 3-for-3 Sunday and scored a run as Old Forge defeated Nanticoke Area, 7-1 in the championship game of the Trojan Classic.

In the consolation game, Dallas edged Lake-Lehman, 4-3.

Monacelli received the Steve Bilko Award as the tournament’s most valuable player.

Steve Kreitzer, who had one of Nanticoke Area’s four hits on the day, received the John Kashatus Award.

Kyle Pokrinchak also had a hit and scored the lone run of the title game for the Trojans.

Dallas’ Ryan Martin received the tourney’s Jim Davis Award and Lake-Lehman’s Cahil Carey received the Pete Gray Award.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Emmaus 13, Wyoming Seminary 7

Kate Romanowski scored four goals, but the Blue Knights dropped a game played Saturday in Emmaus.

Alexis Quick scored twice for Sem, while Madison Sweitzer, Corinne Conygnham and Julia Gabriel put up Wyoming Seminary’s other goals.

Matthew Reese had two hits in both games, but the Colonels dropped the doubleheader while falling to 16-20 overall.

Tom Ring gave Wilkes a two-run lead with a two-run single in the first game, but the Colonels struggled to hold down Penn State-Harrisburg after that.

MEN’S GOLF

King’s captures Freedom Conference title

King’s sophomore Ryan Tracy from Pittston Area and freshman Bill Dombroski from Crestwood tied for second-place with scores of 160 as the Monarchs rallied from 12 strokes down over the final nine holes to post a dramatic one stroke victory in the 2015 Freedom Conference Championships at the Hershey Country Club.

The Monarchs carded a 655 to edge day-one leader Manhattanville which finished at 656. With the win the Monarchs received an automatic berth into the NCAA Division III National Tournament.

The Monarchs trailed Manhattanville by six strokes after the first round on Saturday as the Valiants owned a 326-332 advantage. The lead swelled to 11 strokes after 27 holes with nine to play. But the Monarchs outshot Manhattanville by 12 strokes over the final nine holes to earn their first Freedom Conference title.

Dombroski carded a 79 on Sunday while Tracy scored an 80. Shamus Gartley from Coughlin posted a team-best 78 on Sunday to finish tied for eighth with a 165. Corey Palma was tied for 18th with a 170 while Ryan Georgetti from Dallas rounded out the Monarch line-up with a 177 to finish tied for 24th. Both Palma and Georgetti shot 86 on Sunday.

King’s also received two individual awards as Dombroski was named the 2015 Freedom Conference “Rookie of the Year” while Monarch mentor J.P. Andrejko was named the conference “Coach of the Year”. It marked the second straight season a King’s freshman earned top rookie honors as Tracy won the award in 2014.

King’s will next compete in the NCAA Division III National Tournament May 12-15 in Greensboro, N.C.

Wilkes finishes third

Matt Kachurak finished fifth overall, carding a two-day total of 162 to lead the Colonels to a third place finish at the Freedom Golf Championships.

As a team Wilkes shot a combined 671, just 15 strokes behind second place Manhattanville. King’s College captured the title shooting a 655 for the tournament.

Kachurak finished with an 83 on day two following a 79 on day one. His fifth place finish guaranteed him a spot on the All-Freedom First Team.

Alex Anderson followed tied for eighth place shooting a two-day total of 165, garnering second team All-Freedom honors in the process. Arlindo Isidoro carded an 82 on day two (167 total) while Corey Hauser shot a combined 177 and John Scalese rounded out the Colonel scorers with a two day total of 189.

It marked the first time in Wilkes men’s golf history that two players notched All-Freedom honors finishing in the top ten individually.

SOFTBALL

Brooke Limeberry blasted a run-scoring double in the first game and crushed a two-run homer in the second to led the Colonels.

Christina Gamino allowed just two runs, neither earned, to pick up the win in the circle in the first game. Kim Jones pitched four innings of shutout relief to earn the victory in the second game.

Samantha Bloom drove home Rachel DeTore with a bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the eighth inning of the second game as the Monarchs earned a split.

MEN’S TENNIS

Wilkes 9, King’s 0

Max Appello and Michael Kranz started a doubles sweep, then teamed to win the No. 2 doubles match as Wilkes downed King’s College in the battle for the top seed in this week’s Freedom Conference tournament.

Apello downed Stephen Brand, 6-2, 6-2 in the top singles match, while Kranz won the first second of the No. 2 singles match, 7-5 before George Parkhurst of King’s retired.

Apello and Kranz then won 8-4 in the second singles action.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Wilkes 8, King’s 1

Taylor Hoffmann won in straight sets at No. 2 singles and the Colonels completed an unbeaten regular season with a dominating victory over the Monarchs.

Madeline Griffin took the top singles match and improved her personal record to 21-1 with a 6-4, 6-2 victory for King’s.

Wilkes won the rest, led by Hoffman’s 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 2.

The won improved Wilkes to improved to 16-1 overall and clinched the top seed in the upcoming Freedom Conference tournament with a 6-0 mark. King’s, meanwhile, fell to 6-10 and 3-3 in the conference will be the third seed in the Freedom tourney.
