Andrea DeMaranville, a Wyoming Valley West graduate, was selected as
DeSales University’s female Athlete of the Week for the period ending Feb. 17.
    The junior from Larksville averaged 16.5 points and 4.5 rebounds in a 2-0
week for the Lady Bulldogs.
   
Pieczynski stars at Kutztown
   
Kutztown University’s Jessica Pieczynski, a Wyoming Valley West graduate,
scored a career-high 25 points in her team’s recent 69-55 victory over
Mansfield.
   
The junior from Courtdale connected on 10 of 14 field goals and was 5-for-7
from three-point range. She also had seven rebounds and four steals.
   
Royals star is on academic team
   
Dan Loftus, a junior guard on the University of Scranton men’s basketball
team, has been named to the Verizon District II Academic All-America team.
   
To qualify, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore, be a starter or
key reserve, and have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.2 or better.
   
Loftus, who holds a 3.59 GPA in finance, led the Royals in assists (3.1 per
game) and steals (2.0) and was third on the team in scoring (14.5) and
rebounding (4.8).
   
Crestwood pair shine at Bucknell
   
Crestwood graduates Kate Ruda, a Bucknell University field hockey player,
and Paul Ward, a member of the cross country team, were selected to the dean’s
list for the fall semester. Students need at least a 3.5 grade-point average
to achieve the honor.
   
Hazleton Area graduate Laura Schaffer, a member of the track and field
team, and Bishop Hafey product Kevin Walsh, a member of the men’s cross
country team, also earned the distinction.
   
Ex-Hawk is a hit with bat at ESU
   
Len Makarczyk, a Hanover Area graduate, went 7-for-9 at the plate as the
East Stroudsburg University baseball team dropped three games last week.
   
Makarczyk, a senior, earned ESU Athlete of the Week honors for his
performance. He hit two home runs and three doubles, with seven RBI.
   
Cougars’ Perry is on honor roll
   
College Misericordia’s Jason Perry was named to the Pennsylvania Athletic
Conference Player of the Week Honor Roll for the period ending Feb. 17.
   
The junior center averaged 16.7 points and 9.0 rebounds in a 2-1 week for
the Cougars. He also moved into sixth place on the school’s career scoring
list with 1,222 points.
   
Perry also finished 10th in the league in rebounding with 6.9 per game.
   
Misericordia greats lead PAC
   
College Misericordia basketball standouts Willie Chandler and Leslie
Livingstone were Pennsylvania Athletic Conference statistical champions for
the third consecutive year.
   
Chandler, of Scranton, won the league scoring title with 23.8 points per
game, and Livingstone, from Forty Fort, led the PAC in assists with 5.5 per
game.
   
Brian Coyle finished second in the PAC with 3.8 assists per game.
   
Bloomsburg names football captains
   
The Bloomsburg University football team named seniors Brian Bingaman, Matt
Keys and Rocco Forgione as its captains for the 2002 football season.
   
Bingaman is an offensive lineman who was named to the All-Pennsylvania
Athletic Conference first team last season. Keys, a linebacker, finished third
on the team in tackles a year ago with 51. Forgione, a wide receiver and
Valley View graduate, caught 36 passes for 488 yards with seven touchdowns.
