GWA earns trip to states

WYOMING — Greater Wyoming Area’s 9-10 softball team is going on a trip.

GWA enjoyed big days from throughout its lineup in a 12-2 triumph over South Scranton in the Section 5 championship game Thursday night. With the win, GWA enters the state tournament, which begins Tuesday in Thorndale.

Ellie Glatz hit two home runs and drove in three in a 3-for-4 night. Nicole Silinskie also homered and knocked in three runs for GWA.

Kari Melberger added two hits in support of winning pitcher Stephanie Nowak, who fanned 10.


Back Mountain National 13, Mountain Top 6

Seven players had at least two hits as Back Mountain forced a winner-take-all game tonight.

Xander Shaner had a triple, two doubles and an RBI while also earning the win on the hill. Zach Holthaus also had three hits, including a double, and drove in two.

Ty Osipower (double, two RBI), Max Paczewski (two RBI), Kyle Sincavage (double, RBI), Aidan Conrad and Michael Ropietski all had two hits for Back Mountain. Ben Fife also knocked in two runs.

Aiden Murphy and Jakson Amend both went 2 for 3 with an RBI for Mountain Top. Brennan Magin had two RBI and Ryan Harding added another in the loss.

Tonight’s winner advances to the state tournament beginning Tuesday in West Middlesex.


Back Mountain American 10, Dunmore 5

Michael Starbuck, Dylan Schuster and Jake Connolly all had three hits as Back Mountain advanced to the winner’s bracket final. Starbuck and Schuster both had doubles in the win.

Todd Phillips had a single and a double for Back Mountain, and Will McCrum had an RBI-triple. McCrum also struck out six to pick up the win.

Frank Ruggiero had three hits and Steve Borgia two for Dunmore. Both had doubles in the loss.


Nanticoke 8, Bob Horlacher 7

Nanticoke scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to reach Saturday’s championship round.

Jenna Lipowski went 4 for 4 with a double, two runs and three RBI. Miranda Dunn added two hits for Nanticoke and Karley Bennette had a double. Mary Kate Pentkowski had a hit and an RBI.

Danielle Krispin had three hits and a run for Horlacher, which plays tonight at 5:30. Sydney Faux added two hits and two runs in the loss.


Mountain Top Teal 16, Harvey’s Lake/Swoyersville 12

Jeremy Harper went 3 for 4 with three RBI and picked up the win on the mound for Mountain Top.

Nick Bafuno and Dylan Walsh each had two hits in the victory. Matt Hayden pitched two scoreless innings to close out the game for Teal.
