NEWPORT TWP. — An inmate serving a sentence for a homicide in Berks County was charged with attacking another inmate at the State Correctional Institution at Retreat earlier this year.

Francois Henderson, 37, allegedly assaulted Paul Jamil Boyd in the yard at SCI-Reteat on Aug. 5.

Boyd suffered a large laceration to his face and two lacerations to his right arm as a result of the assault, according to the criminal complaint filed by state police at Shickshinny.

A homemade cutting instrument containing a razor blade was found at the scene of the attack, the complaint says.

Boyd was treated at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center in Plains Township.

Henderson was charged with assault by prisoner, aggravated assault and simple assault.

Court records say Henderson was sentenced by a Berks County judge in September 2011 to 28 years, six months to 57 years in state prison after a jury convicted him of third-degree murder, firearms not to be carried without a license and a felony drug trafficking charge.

According to an opinion by the state Superior Court that upheld the conviction, Henderson was convicted in the fatal shooting of Chauncey Pringle outside an apartment building in Reading on Aug. 26, 2007.

Henderson was transferred from SCI-Retreat to SCI-Green in Greene County.
