HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL
The Northeastern Pennsylvania Senior All-Star games, which feature boys and
girls basketball players from the Lackawanna League against the Wyoming Valley
Conference, are scheduled for tonight at Penn State Wilkes-Barre in Lehman
Township.
   
The girls game is at 6:15 p.m. The boys play at 8 p.m.Twenty of the
nation’s current top-50-ranked collegiate golfers and 17 of the nation’s
top-50-ranked teams are among the potential field going to the Glenmaura
National Golf Club in Moosic for the NCAA Division I Men’s East Regional Golf
Tournament, scheduled for May 18-20.
   
The 2000 East Regional will include a field of 27 qualifying teams and six
individuals for a total of 141 players. Of those, 11 teams and two individuals
will move on to the championship round of the national tournament at Auburn,
Ala., the following week.
   
Included in that group is defending national team champion Georgia Tech,
which scored a three-stroke victory over runner-up Oklahoma State at last
year’s national finals competition.
   

    The WVC girls participating are Jenn Noon and Stephanie Simonitis, Dallas;
Heather Roback, Kim Turoski, Jen Blasi and Kim Heffron, Nanticoke; Tara Wayman
and Sheridan Fischi, Bishop Hoban; Sara Chmielewski, GAR; Robyn Duda, Wyoming
Valley West; and Maria Zangardi, Seton Catholic.
   
The WVC boys participating are P.J. Sciandra and Matt Bowen, Wyoming Area;
Jim McGavin, Sylvester Gibson and Dale Rapson, Meyers; Matt Hopple, Wyoming
Valley West; Josh Oravic and Dave Plisko, Hanover Area; Joe Tracy, Seton
Catholic; and Phil Castellino, Pittston Area.
