SOCCER
   
Heat ties Eagles 3-3
    HAZLE TWP. – The Hazleton Heat jumped out to an early 3-0 lead but had to
settle for a tie with the East Mountain Eagles in a 3-3 game Sept. 17.
   
For the Heat, goalkeeper Walter Meza turned in another outstanding game at
the net at the Greater Hazleton Youth Soccer Association’s soccer complex at
Community Park.
   
The Heat scored two minutes into the match when Tyler Wisniewski found the
net off an assist from Eddie Maslo and Jeremy Wizeman. The Heat made it 2-0 at
the 11-minute mark when Maslo scored off an assist from Evan Paris. The Heat’s
final goal came at the 13-minute mark when Wisniewski found the net off an
assist from Maslo and Rocco Pozzessere.
   
Jeremy Racho and David Falvello played well in the midfield for the Heat.
Defensively, Jonathan Pierotti, Bruce Slusser and Jeremy Miller played well
for the Hazleton travel team.

Chargers down Jaguars
   
The YMPA Chargers ran all over Denny’s Jaguars in a shutout game Sept. 16.
   
Jon Nahay and Dedrick Silver delivered scoring runs to give the Chargers a
20-0 victory over the Jaguars. Jim Generose and Austin Kinney played well on
defense for the Chargers, who are now 4-0 for the season.
   
The Chargers faced some tough play from the Jaguars’ Pat O’Donnel, Damon
Barletta and Zach Natt.
   
Whippets shut out
   
Junior Raiders
   

   
Freeland broke long runs all day on Sept. 16, pulling off a 20-0 victory
over a smarting Junior Raiders team.
   
A.J. Petrone led the way for the Whippets, while the Raiders’ Mike Volciak,
Mia Justofin and Cody D’Andrea led the defense.
   
The Raiders’ Chris Chapparo and Giovanni Cochran played a strong offense.
   

   
McAdoo Chargers

The McAdoo Chargers were able to get a couple of touchdowns past the
Keystone Cougars for a 13-0 victory in the second Hazleton Area Football
League game Sept. 16. The Jaguars’ Eric Buckery, Chris Rupert and Allen Judash
played a good defense to keep the Chargers from running all over their team.

The Hazleton Raiders Pee Wees got scoring from five different players in
Sept. 17’s 39-6 victory over the McAdoo Chargers.
   
The Raiders scored on an end-around to Josh “Thumper” Wenner, a 4-yard
run from Ryan Dura, a 60-yard pass to Andre Fisher, a 7-yard jaunt from Josh
Caldwell, a 40-yard run from Antone DiSabella and a 55-yard run from Andre
Fisher.
   
The Raiders scored a 2-point conversion in the first half on a pass from
Vinnie Palowski to Wenner. The defense for the Raiders saw stellar play from
23 different players, led by Scott Ednie, Zack Leshko, Paul Matz, Steve
Buckery, “Bull” Dozier and Dave Satterfield.
   
McAdoo, led by Brandon Samler, scored on an impressive 65-yard run in the
second quarter and played tough all afternoon.

The Hazleton Raiders Midget team, possibly inspired by their Pee Wee
counterparts’ victory earlier in the day, did some scoring of their own in a
32-6 victory over the McAdoo Chargers on Sept. 17.
   
Scoring was provided by Jon “Utah” Wenner, Dave Fedor, Ray Koslop and
Nick Haffner, with Jay Quinn chalking up yardage to support the offense. The
defense was tough as always, with Dylan Bertola, Matt Vine, Jeff Pensock and
Dino Deritis leading the way.
   
McAdoo played tough and got its score on a 45-yard breakaway run from
Russel Streath. Mike Gaughan led the defense for the Chargers.

GOLF
   
Special Olympics Tournament – An Oct. 7 golf tournament at Blue Ridge Trail
Golf Club in Mountaintop will benefit Luzerne County Special Olympics’
Hazleton Chapter. Hole in one prizes include a 2000 model automobile and a
trip for two to Orlando, Fla. Prizes also will be awarded for four flight
winners, the longest drive and closest to the pin. Only 144 golfers may
compete. Reservations will be taken on a first-come-first-served basis. A $75
registration fee includes cart and greens fees, dinner and beverages, a sleeve
of Special Olympics golf balls and a 10 percent discount at the Pro Shop.

WILKES-BARRE – The Keystone State Games Inc., sanctioned by the Middle
Atlantic Association of USA Boxing, announced the 2000 Boxing Championships
will be Oct. 21 at Coughlin High School, Wilkes-Barre.
   
Boxing begins at 2:30 p.m., and there will be three divisions.
   
All boxers are to be preregistered with USA Boxing and must bring their USA
Boxing Pass Book to weigh-ins. Competition will follow USA Boxing rules.
Boxers will be paired on fight day according to weigh-ins, physicals~ and
discretion of the director.
