National Honor Society busy helping others

By: John Poli

The Pittston Area National Honor Society is holding a “We Need It All Drive”. The drive began January 26 and will continue until Tuesday, February 4. Students at the high school were asked to bring in coats, warm clothing, and canned foods. The National Honor Society members were required to bring in two clothing items and two canned food items. The items will go to the Bethel AME Church and Homeless Shelter in Scranton.

The group is also having a “Heart for Haiti” drive. This drive will run from January 29 through February 5. Students and faculty are asked to bring in money to make a donation for the earthquake victims in Haiti. If the school reaches the goal of $1,000 there will be a dress down day on February 11 where students can wear appropriate jeans and t-shirts. The shirt doesn’t have to be red, but the Honor Society would like the shirt to be red because February is heart month.

Junior Leadership

Applications for Junior Leadership Wilkes-Barre have arrived in the Guidance Office. Junior Leadership Wilkes-Barre is a leadership development program for area high school students who will be entering their junior year in the fall of 2010. The program offers students the opportunity to work with adult leaders in their community through daylong seminars held over a nine-month period.

Junior Leadership Wilkes-Barre provides the following: it acquaints high school students with community needs and resources, which influence the future of Greater Wilkes-Barre. It also develops leadership skills and encourages students to interact with community leaders, decision makers, and peers from other schools and challenges emerging leaders to apply their knowledge and skills to community service projects.

Students can obtain applications in the Guidance Office (A-A1). Completed applications, including two adult references, and a $10.00 processing fee are due in the Guidance Office to Ms. Darbenzio on or before Tuesday, February 9.
