Slay the tobacco dragon, join today’s Smokeout

Sometimes it seems that nothing can stop the 400,000-death-per-year killing
machine that is the tobacco industryIt’s been ambushed by class-action,
attacked by medical science, assaulted by public health groups.
Still the nicotine traffic continues at the rate of $50 billion each year
and 3,000 new teenage smokers each day. Despite health warnings, media
campaigns and smoke-free zones, the percentage of young people who smoke has
risen at an alarming rate in the past few years.

Smoking among college students is up 28 percent. Among high school seniors
it’s up 32 percent. One in four college students and one in three high school
seniors are now regular smokers.

That’s a frightening statistic that could sharply increase tobacco-related
deaths decades from now.

Well today is your day to do something about it. Each year, more people try
to quit smoking for the Great American Smokeout than any other day of the
year.

As the American Cancer Society says, if you can quit for one day, you can
quit for the rest of your life.

Whether you’re a young smoker or an old smoker, try today, for just one
day, to do without the 43 known cancer-causing chemicals in cigarettes and
cigarette smoke. Use nicotine gum, or a patch or just white-knuckle
