WILKES-BARRE — A second criminal homicide trial will begin at 10 a.m.
today for Joseph O’Boyle, who is accused of beating his mother to death in
1988.

Jury selection began Monday and ended Thursday morning after the 12-member
jury and three alternates were selected.
Luzerne County District Attorney Peter Paul Olszewski Jr. has said he
expects the trial to last about two weeks. Olszewski is seeking a first-degree
murder conviction.

A jury found O’Boyle, 40, guilty of first-degree murder in a 1988 trial
before Luzerne County Court of Common Pleas Judge Gifford Cappellini.

The state Superior Court in 1992 dismissed the guilty verdict on a legal
technicality and ordered that O’Boyle be given a new trial.
