WILKES-BARRE — The city planning commission approved plans by the owners of Sherman Hills to install gates as a part of the overall security improvements at the low-income apartment complex.

The plans include the installation of a booth to be staffed around the clock that controls gates for people and vehicles coming and going on North Empire Court. The booth would have control of a second set of gates to be located on Parkview Circle. The North Sherman Street entrance to the complex would be closed, but emergency responders and police would have access to a key to open the gate to be placed there.

The approval was given on the condition that the owners undertake additional steps to improve the security.
