Yurish

Matthew Yurish, a sophomore at MMI Preparatory School, was the local runner-up in the American Chemical Society (ACS) High School Chemistry Competition examination for the Susquehanna Valley section of the society. The competitive examination recognizes and rewards outstanding high school chemistry students in eight counties of northeastern Pennsylvania. Fewer than 10 percent of high school chemistry students are nominated to take the exam each year. Yurish and his chemistry teacher, Laura Petro, were invited to the Annual ACS Awards Banquet at Bloomsburg University, where students received their awards and teachers were honored. Yurish is the son of Thomas and JuleAnn Yurish, Freeland.

Rebecca Bartoli, an illustration major from West Pittston, was awarded first place for the Miriam Troop ‘38 Portrait Prize at Moore College of Art & Design’s Honors Convocation.

Clancy Boylan, Kingston, was a member of a team of four Duquesne University Law School students that won the National Championship at the prestigious National Student Trial Advocacy Competition held in Las Vegas, Nev. Sponsored by the American Association for Justice, the event is touted as a “best of the best” competition and places the School of Law in the ranks of the best trial advocacy programs in the country. Duquesne was the only trial team to remain undefeated in the competition. The team previously won the regional title for the competition in Pittsburgh.

Julie M. Mercadante, Wilkes-Barre, and Lauren M. Lockus, Pringle, were recently inducted into the Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia. The honor society is for first-year students who attain a first-semester academic average of at least 3.50 and rank in the top 20 percent of the class.
