Avoca, Dupont and Duryea joint Crime Watch parade and party in the park will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 2 at Healey Memorial Playground. There will be fun for children and adults and informative helpful safety instruction along with a variety of food. Avoca members are encouraged to contribute cupcakes and cookies for this event to be dropped off anytime after noon at the playground. A community parade will pass through all three towns.


Residents are asked to turn on porch lights on National Crime Watch night set for Tuesday, Aug. 5. Avoca Crime Watch members will call on family and friends with more information and window signs. Crime Watch meets at 6:30 the third Tuesday of the month. No meetings will be held in August or September. VFW Chicken BBQ

Avoca VFW post 8335 will conduct their annual chicken barbecue dinner from 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 6 at the post premises, 915 Main St. Tickets are available at the post or from a member, and will be sold at the door for a donation of $9.

Ladies Auxiliary


The next Ladies Auxiliary meeting will at 7 p.m. on Aug. 4. Mary Ann Tigue, Sandy Rosser and Louise Bartush will be hostesses. Newly elected officers will begin their 2014-2015 term at this time.


Yard waste


Yard waste will be collected for Avoca Borough residents on the first and third Tuesday of each month. The following separated items will be accepted: Grass clippings and leaves, shrubs, hedge clippings, tree limbs. Rocks, stones, dirt and animal waste will not be collected.


A maximum of three containers not to exceed 3 pounds will be allowed. Do not use plastic bags and place containers at curbside by 8 a.m.


Recycling rules


Moosic recycling truck is at the municipal garage from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. every Thursday. Paper can be mixed with cardboard. Residents are urged to read and follow posted signs. Area will be monitored, violators will be fined or banned from future recycling privileges. Recycling flyers are available in the lobby of the municipal building and at the recycling trailer.
