WILKES-BARRE — Some have strived to promote literacy development. Others held food drives. Still others undertook a major clean-up project for a venerable local theater.

What would you like Junior Leadership Wilkes-Barre’s volunteers to do for your organization?

JLWB, one of the programs offered by LeadershipWilkes-Barre, is inviting area nonprofit organizations to submit requests for proposals (RFPs) for class community impact projects over the coming program year, which lasts from September through April. JLWB will select up to eight projects.

The deadline to submit is Aug. 31.

“The community impact project component of the JLWB experience is meant to serve several purposes,” Program Director Jessica Cronauer said.

“Classmates work together to design and execute a project that fulfills a community need,” Cronauer added. “In doing so, participants utilize the leadership development skills they’re learning throughout the year, while making a positive impact on their community.”

For non-profit organizations and community groups, this invitation to submit a RFP presents an opportunity to use the services of a talented team of high school juniors (approximately eight to 10 individuals). The group can help organizations with a project they have had in mind, but lack the human resources to accomplish.

No more than $3,000

Projects must have a reasonable scope and budget and cannot include capital campaigns or raising large sums of money. Junior Leadership participants are restricted to raising no more than $3,000 per project.

Junior Leadership Wilkes-Barre, a program of Leadership Wilkes-Barre, is a leadership development program for high school juniors which enables students to develop leadership skills while increasing community awareness.

The program offers students the opportunity to work with adult leaders in their community through day-long seminars held over a nine-month period. An in-depth curriculum acquaints class members with community needs, opportunities, challenges and resources.

The program focuses on creating leadership skills in issue areas such as media, government, citizenship, diversity, and the justice system and community issues.
