NEW COLUMBIA — One woman was killed and 44 people were injured early this morning when a Greyhound bus and tractor-trailer collided on Interstate 80 in Union County.

Approximately 20 ambulances from five counties responded to the crash site on I-80 westbound about four miles west of the Route 15 interchange in White Deer Township.

State police at Milton said the accident occurred at 1:41 a.m., but no other details have been released.

A total of 49 passengers, plus the bus driver, were aboard the bus traveling non-stop from New York City to Cleveland, Ohio.

Ambulances transported the injured passengers to at least five hospitals — Evangelical Community Hospital in Lewisburg, Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, and hospitals in Williamsport, Lock Haven and Muncy.

Geisinger Medical Center in Danville reported it was treating 13 patients. Four pateints — including the bus driver — were reported in critical condition, two were in serious condition and seven were listed as fair. Four others were treated and released.

A total of 14 patients were taken to Evangelical Community Hospital. They were all treated and released, and at noon, were awaiting transportation services from Greyhound, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Lock Haven Hospital spokesman Jeff Johns said one of the three patients the hospital received was transferred, another was admitted and the third was treated and released. Tracie Witter of Susquehanna Health Systems said 10 people were treated at Muncy Valley Hospital and released while five were treated at Williamsport Regional Medical Center and released.

Greyhound dispatched an emergency response team to assist local authoritties and customers. This team will assist customers and help them retrieve their belongings.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, Akos Gubica, 36, of New Jersey, said at the scene that he was westbound on his way to Ohio when his truck was struck in the rear by the bus. Gubica said he was traveling at about the speed limit and did now know why the bus struck his truck from behind. He escaped injury.

Interstate 80 westbound was closed at the Route 15 interchange and traffic was detoured off at Exit 212 (Williamsport) onto Interstate 180 westbound, to Route 220 southbound, and back onto the interstate south of Lock Haven.

One westbound lane of Interstate 80 was expected to be reopened Wednesday by late afternoon or early evening, a spokesman for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation said.
