with a pair of RBI as the Marian Catholic softball team defeated Panther
Valley 17-2
   
Monday in HometownKathy Gallagher got the victory for the Fillies, and
Nikki Reichard had an RBI double.
    The College Misericordia baseball team will make its first Pennsylvania
Athletic Conference playoff appearance when the Cougars host Alvernia at 3
p.m. today.
   
Misericordia, 12-14-1 overall and 8-4 in the PAC, finished in a three-way
tie for second place with Alvernia and Eastern. The Cougars earned the second
seed by virtue of their 3-1 record against the other two.
   
Today’s winner will host top-seeded Allentown, the defending PAC champion,
in the first game of a best-of-three series at 3 p.m. Friday.
   
Misericordia enters the playoffs with a four-game winning streak and has
won six of its last seven games.
   
The Anthracite Golf Association has received a one-time grant of
approximately $30,000 for goods and services from the United States Golf
Association.
   
The grant is part of the USGA’s capital support initiative to more than 100
state and regional amateur golf associations around the country. The USGA will
provide a variety of communications equipment, including a state-of-the-art
computer system, two-way radios, portable lightning protectors and an advanced
course-measuring device.
   
Franklin and Marshall freshman Leah Rubin, playing at the No. 2 singles and
No. 1 doubles positions, helped the Diplomats to an 8-1 Centennial Conference
women’s tennis victory over Western Maryland on Monday.
   
The victory clinched a share of the conference championship for the
Diplomats, who are 14-2 overall and 9-0 in the league.
   
Rubin, a Wyoming Valley West graduate, posted a 6-0, 6-1 singles victory
over Lara Henderson and then teamed with sophomore Kate Rouff for an 8-6
doubles victory over Henderson and Kim Keller.
   
The Diplomats close out their regular season today at Gettysburg (8-1 in
the Centennial Conference) and must defeat the Bullets for sole possession of
the conference title.
   
Franklin and Marshall is ranked seventh in the NCAA Division III East
Region.
