MOUNT COBB – The Country Club of Scranton’s Old Course swallowed golfers in
the first round of the Pennsylvania Amateur Championship on Monday.
Only 15 of 133 golfers shot par or better on the par-72 course. Jeffery
Schroeder and Aaron Friedman were among the few to get the best of the course
and shots 69s to lead the field. Richard Stimmel, last year’s champion from
St. Jude Golf Club, is one stroke behind the co-leaders with a 70.
Brent Mullins of Forty Fort, who qualified for the tournament with a 65,
shot a 78 on Monday. The second round of the tournament is scheduled for
today, and the field will then be cut for Wednesday’s final round. Tournament
officials expect a score of around 8-over 152 to make the cut for the final 18
holes.
Friedman’s round included nine pars, six birdies and three bogeys. The
19-year-old represents the Meadowlands Country Club and is going into his
third year on the Arizona State University golf team.
Friedman, who is playing in his first state Amateur, credited his putting
as the key to his round.
“It (the course) sets up nice for me – it’s pretty open,” Friedman said.
“On the first hole I got off to a bad start, but I had a nice par save. After
that I was never out of position to make par.”
Schroeder, who represents Longue Vue Country Club, was runner-up in the
event a year ago. It was his best finish in seven years of playing the Amateur
Championship. On Monday, he shot a 1-over 36 on the front nine and scorched
the back nine with a 4-under 33. His round included four birdies and only one
bogey.
“The course is in great shape; the greens are perfect,” Schroeder said. “I
hit 16 greens in regulation. I played a solid round.”
Schroeder said a bad shot on the fifth hole accounted for his only bogey of
the round. He added that shooting a 69 in the first round takes the pressure
off him in today’s round, because he’s in a better position to make the cut.
Mullins, 17, representing Glen Oaks Country Club, was one of the youngest
players to qualify for the tournament. The 1996 Wyoming Valley Conference Golf
League MVP from Wyoming Seminary shot a 1-over 36 on the front nine, but had
troubles on the back nine, where he shot a 5- over 42.
Bob Gill, representing the Fox Hill Country Club, opened with a 78, which
included three double bogeys. He managed to eagle the par-5, 482-yard 18th
hole, which puts him in a better position to survive the 36-hole cut.
